Title: | Fire Science and Technology : Research & Its Implementations |
Authors: | Sharma, Sunil K Kumar, Rajiv |
Issue Date: | 4-Jan-2012 |
Abstract: | Rapid increase in urbanization, industrial growth and the related
construction activities is leading to increased concern about fire
safety. Newer materials, construction technologies and architectural
designs are being introduced. Living and work spaces are shrinking
in view of space constrains thereby making fire safety requirements
all the more important. Conventional materials are being replaced
by newer ones whose fire behavior is not well understood. Man
made materials and newer configurations of living apartments and
industrial areas are replacing the conventional norms. These
factors add up to fire hazards.
In terms of casualties due to fire incidents, India ranks high in the
world. Even the insured losses are to the tune of Rupees three
thousand Crores. Use of new materials whose fire characteristics
are not known multiplies the hazard many folds. The fire behavior,
combustion products and their effects on visibility and physiological
trauma on occupants (from these materials) need to be understood
for fire safety considerations. To address these problems fire
behavior, fire dynamics, extinguishment techniques and predictive
methodologies are being investigated the world over. The more
important facet to this problem is implementation of the research in
field and finding solutions to practical problems of fire safety.
The National Conference on Fire Science & Technology- Research
and its Implementation (FIRST 2011) is being organized by CSIRCBRI,
Roorkee during 3-4th November 2011. The major themes of
the conference are Fire Retardant Materials, Fire Protection and Life
Safety, Fire Extinguishment, Mathematical Modeling and Predictive
Technologies and Case Studies. A fairly large number of delegates
are attending the conference. The conference will provide ample
opportunity to review the latest knowledge and exchange
information as a fair representation of research organizations,
academies, industries and end users is scheduled.
The proceedings contain reviewed and edited technical papers
submitted and presented at the conference. We hope that the
technical contents of the proceedings will be of use to researchers,
academicians, students, industry and policy maker for
understanding the technical aspects of fire hazards and efficiently
managing fire disasters. We are thankful to all the authors who
have contributed to this conference and to the sponsors for their
interest in this endeavor. |
