Abstract: The science of designing & planning of buildings is quite old in India and the harmony with and use of nature has always a consideration. The sustainable development is a result of financial, social and ecological aspects of a built environment as a system. Unfortunately, in the last decades or so the modern generation of architects & designers have missed the path and blindly following the western concepts developed out of globalization, computerization and urbanization. The partnership between man and nature has lost. Local materials have lost their relevance and every one using imported & costly materials as a mad race for the sake of showism. Clients and architects talk lot about Vastu, and use it as a superstitious and astrological point of view, while it contains the simple principles of environmental planning having natural elements into consideration, which need to be identified and practiced. Recycling and harvesting of water, use of non-conventional sources of energy like solar / photovoltaic and other sources like wind & biogas, which are area specific feasible alternatives. Traditional use of local materials and techniques with social acceptability and economical feasibility are important considerations for the sustainable architecture. These practices can be incorporated alongwith proper landscape without disturbing the flora & fauna of the area.
